Nailsea Choral Society brings singing into the community for both listeners and performers. Singing is scientifically proved to be one of the best ways to unwind and de-stress, socialise and be joyful. When you are singing you can not think or worry about anything else.
Nailsea Choral Society is a friendly, happy group, open to all ages and voices. Anyone can join. There are no auditions, but obviously some ability to read music is useful. The choir now known as Nailsea Choral Society was founded in 1925, and celebrated its ninetieth year, 2015, with performances of two major choral works: Mendelssohn’s Elijah in Clifton Cathedral in May, and Handel’s Messiah in Nailsea Methodist Church in December.
The choir is most ably directed with great energy and professionalism by Tom Williams who also holds the posts of Choral Director at St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, Director of the Erebus Ensemble, and Artistic Director of the Clifton International Festival of Music. Rosemary Burgon has been the Society’s accompanist for over twenty-five years and is enormously valued for her expertise and experience.
The Choir’s repertoire includes huge choral works such as Mahler’s 8th. and Verdi’s Requiem, the more modern such as Orff’s Carmina Burana, Durufle’s Rutter’s, and Archer’s Requiems and Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Christmas Carols, motets and anthems by those such as Vivaldi and Purcell, masses of Masses and other music by the likes of Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Schütz, and Dvorak, and lighter music such as from the pens of Edward German and Arthur Sullivan.
The Society is managed by a small, hard working committee, made up of active members of the Society aided by willing volunteers for the concerts and events that take place. The Society’s President is David Pountney, Chief Executive and Artistic Director of Welsh National Opera and internationally renowned for his work here and overseas as a director and translator of opera. His father, Willoughby, was for many years a distinguished Director of Music for the Nailsea Choral Society. Christopher Jennings is the Society’s Vice-President and is closer to home with a lifetime of professional singing to his credit and a busy and successful singing teaching practice in the locality.
The choral societies of Nailsea, Clevedon and Portishead are informally associated in the Gordano Choral Societies grouping, collaborating over the dates of their respective concerts and often offering reduced ticket prices for concerts and events to members of the grouping.
There are now over 90 singers in the choir, but newcomers are always welcome only subject to there being enough room in the voice part which they sing. Rehearsals take place weekly on Tuesdays at the Vestry Hall of Christ Church, Nailsea, starting at 7.30 p.m. Prospective members are welcome to contact us at any time. Please let us know if you would like to come along to the first or second rehearsal of the new session (at 7.30 p.m. on September 3rd or September 10th). Note that members need to attend at least 75% of the rehearsals for any concert in order to take part in the concert.
